Project type
Spatial installation prototype
Location
Wellington, New Zealand
Within the Cancer Trials Clinic,
positive distraction has the most potential to address
the spatial issues and emotional support needs of
the users. Among the different types of positive
distraction, we have found the most effective solution
is nature. Immersing oneself in nature has been
proven to have restorative and calming effects that
assist in regaining attention and reducing depression,
stress and anxiety levels. Having access to nature has
also been proven to help with pain tolerance and
reducing healing and treatment times.
The concept is a mechanically driven installation
that responds to the movements of inhabitants of the
space. With this concept we hope to build a narrative
in which inhabitants are welcomed by the space as a
method for allowing a momentary acknowledgment
of being present in that space, in that moment. In
doing so we hope to provide inhabitants with a sense
of presence/existence especially for those dealing
with questions of mortality.
